This is the first in a new series of paintings of endangered UK birds of prey. Painted using only bright primary colours, eagles become exotic parrots and owls become tropical peacocks. Highlighting how we undervalue and neglect our natural ecosystem and forget the importance these beautiful birds have within it.
The Big Blue
As a scuba diver I have explored the coastal reefs of Australia, Tasmania, Fiji, Indonesia, Egypt, Croatia and the soapy green depths of the North Sea.
My underwater paintings are all acrylic on canvas and were created using underwater photographs as reference.
I took two years out to travel and dive around the coasts of Australia, Indonesia and Fiji photographing and painting a variety of underwater wildlife. In Fiji, I had the privilege of diving with a group who had teamed up with the local communities to protect and rebuild their reefs, specifically to bring bull sharks back into the waters.
I have always felt that there aren't enough good strong female role models. I decided to paint a series of portraits in Kodachrome style, of my heroines. It is an ongoing project.
Lotte Haas, first female underwater photographer Jerrie Cobb, taught the NASA astronauts how to fly and dive Valentina Tereshkova, first woman in space Wangari Maathai, founder of the Greenbelt Movement The Night Witches, Russian fighter pilots
and the list goes on and the paintings go on...
Commissioned paintings are enjoyable because often the subjects are ones I wouldn't choose to paint myself. These are some examples of completed commissions, now in private collections in the UK and Australia.
